Your Brain on Art: My Favorite Non-Fiction Book for September

Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross was an interesting read because it surprised me in significant ways.

I have always appreciated the arts both as a participant and a connoisseur. My father was a musician, I’m a writer, and numerous family members are artists, which is why I was particularly interested in the book’s topic.

Given the disappearing focus on the arts in many schools, it was exciting to learn: “engaging in an art project for as little as forty-five minutes reduces the stress hormone cortisol, no matter your skill level, and just one art experience per month can extend your life by ten years.”

I concur with the words of the author of Grit, Angela Duckworth, “This book blew my mind.”  Whether it’s dance or music, writing or painting or anything in between, new research confirms what many have experienced – art changes us for the better. It’s a great non-fiction read for these times.
