Contemporary fiction. Family drama. Mystery. When I finished Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty, my first question was: What genre was it? I’m not sure of the answer, but to me it’s a layered family drama blended with mystery elements.
This is the first novel I’ve read by this New York Times bestselling author. The book was recommended during my Mystery Mastermind writing class. The professor suggested this would be a great book to dissect for plot and characters. From that vantage point, I agree, and something I'm glad I did after finishing the book.
But if you’re not into dissecting novels like I am sometimes, it’s an intriguing story about a woman who disappears and the family drama that pursues. Filled with dark secrets, interesting characters, surprises, and twists, the story is integrated around the business, teaching, and playing of tennis. While I enjoyed the layered family drama and plot twists, I was a bit unsettled by the ending.
Apples Never Fall is a book I’d recommend to readers who enjoy interesting characters, family drama, and hard to figure out mystery elements that keeps one guessing until the very end.
