The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: My Favorite Novel for March

After seeing this 2017 novel week after week on The New York Times best seller-list, I finally bought a copy three years ago, intrigued to find out why it was so popular. But it got buried in my to-read stack of books until this month when I rediscovered it.

Now after reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, I understand why it was, and still is, so popular. Like an eavesdropper, the reader peeks into the life of a fictional Hollywood star, challenged by stardom, cultural norms, and expectations of women during the 1950s to 80s, as the aging Eveyln Hugo tells her story to a young journalist hired to write her biography, everything from her marriages and lifestyle to her regrets and secrets.

The character’s story is captivating with unexpected twists, as the historical glimpses of old Hollywood and the societal elements in those times make for interesting contemplation as the concept of telling one’s truth becomes an irreversible decision that impacts others.

If you like books you don’t want to put down with a unique story, interesting characters, and historical elements, I’d recommend this book. And if like me, you like books that leave you with lingering thoughts and emotions, may I suggest, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
