Yesteryear: My Favorite Novel for August

While I noticed the novel, Yesteryear by Caro Clarie Burke, on The New York Times best-seller-list for several months, it was my husband’s recommendation that nudged me to put it at the top of my reading list for August. I’m glad I did.

I like books best when I don’t know much about them. All I knew about Yesteryear was its intriguing logline: “Natalie Heller Mills, a privileged tradwife social media influencer, wakes up to find she is living in the comparatively difficult reality of 1855.”  

The book is classified in various places as a psychological thriller and/or a satire. I found it an immersive read that landed me more toward the satire category. However it's categorized, it was hard for me to put down with an ending I never saw coming.  

This is the debut novel of author Caro Claire Burke, who I heartedly congratulate for writing such a provocative story aligned with these times.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story that offers a thoughtful and edgy mirror about current culture. I agree with The New York Times Book Review:  “Mesmerizing … An ingenious, exquisite, be-careful-what-you-wish-for.”
