Different Paths to Success

This week (10/5 to 10/11) on Work Matters we take a look at skilled jobs as technicians and in the trades as career options.

Listen this week as our guests offer that there are many paths to success. First, Joe Lamacchia, author of Blue Collar and Proud of It talks about the excitement and booming job prospects in blue collar trades. Then, Dr. Ken Gray, professor, and author of Workforce Education: The Basics talks about doors that are open to people who explore training options outside of a four-year college degree. I think you'll find their perspectives interesting and refreshing.

More Winning at Working Tips

For me, winning at working is not about climbing organizational hierarchies but offering the best of your uniqueness and gifts to the world. In that sense, only when we're all winning will we truly all win. I believe that's a vision worth working towards.

Most days, I add winning at working tips on Twitter. You'll find me there as @nan_russell. Here are fifteen of my recent tweets:

Winning at Working TIP #36: Learn by listening not talking; persuade by understanding not arguing; problem-solve by asking not telling.

Winning at Working TIP #37: Step-up. Stop waiting and hoping someone else will take ownership and make things happen. Be that person.

Winning at Working TIP #38: It's a big world we share. It's not a position that helps you see differently, it's the "eyes" you develop.

Winning at Working TIP #39: The impressions we make by how we go about our work, last. How you do what you do differentiates you + or -.

Winning at Working TIP #40: Success takes persistence, determination, commitment, passion, practice, focus and hard work.

Winning at Working TIP #41: Are your thoughts limiting or invigorating? Think you can and your thinking can help make it happen.

Winning at Working TIP #42: Admit when you're wrong. Fix your mistakes, learn from them, move on. Sign of accountable people.

Winning at Working TIP #43: Don't fall into the "maybe" trap: workplace way to say "no." Be decisive and own your answer.

Winning at Working TIP #44: Fuel your progress with incremental action. Accomplishment breeds accomplishment; progress multiplies progress.

Winning at Working TIP #45: Tend your work-acres. Focus there. Don't worry about how others tend their acres down the hall.

Winning at Working TIP #46: Bring yourself to your work, in the deepest sense, and you'll fuel your passion & ignite your spirit.

Winning at Working TIP #47: Refuse to let a soul-depleting boss or environment hijack your self-esteem, passion or dreams. Own your future.

Winning at Working TIP #48: Find the best of who they are and bring it to the world. What are you saving your best efforts for, anyway?

Winning at Working TIP #49: Don't confuse working hard w/ making progress. Progress requires gradual betterment and personal development.

Winning at Working TIP #50: The stories we tell impact how we're perceived at work: team player or not team player; victim or problem-solver.
