September 05, 2006TIP #51: Become Absorbed
Thomas Edison said, "The first requisite for success is the ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one problem incessantly without growing weary." And while I believe Edison is right, in this IM world, we are constantly bombarded by instant messages, emails, text messages and cell phones. All seek to pull our energies to other thoughts.
So we've become good at multitasking. But one key to winning at working is to know when it's time to stop multitasking and start single tasking.
The ability to become engaged and absorbed by our work separates people who are winning at working from those who aren't. Some people call it focus. Whatever you want to call it, you need it. Tasking is not doing. Real doing requires absorption.
