TIP #36 - Head & Heart

Those who think the workplace is not a place for heart are wrong in my book. It takes both head and heart to make the best decisions and to be winning at work.

As Fyodor Dostoyevsky puts it: "It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them - the character, the heart, the generous qualities, progressive ideas."

When you use more than your head at work, you have an advantage. If you want better results, put your feelings, impressions, values and authentic self into the mix.

TIP #35: Learn - Don't Dwell

Did you know that when Henry Ford manufactured the first Model-T, he forgot to put in a reverse gear? Big mistakes ... little mistakes ... we all make mistakes.

You can "beat yourself up" over your mistakes, fret about their impact and flounder in self-recriminating thoughts. Or you can fix them, learn from them and move on.

I agree with Sophia Loren that "Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life." I've made plenty. And I've wasted too much time brooding and agonizing over them. It took me years to realize mistakes (even the painful ones) are part of life and help me grow.

So, if you want to be winning at working, put your mistakes in perspective. Don't dwell on them. Learn. And move on.

Thought for the Day

I'm a quote collector. In fact you'll find a different quote everyday on each of my two websites: Winning at Working and In the Scheme of Things.

Last night while cleaning up my office, I ran across one that got me thinking. It's from Bits and Pieces (JUL04):

"You have to work ... to be happy. You're not going to get it through your career, money, or even love of another person. It's between you and yourself." Rufus Wainwright, Musician

You can read this quote anyway you want. But, it sparked a thought in me, which of course, is what I love about quotes.

Here's where I took that spark. We all have unique talents, abilities, "gifts." Only when we discover what they are and offer them to the world do we become who we are. There's a difference between doing and being. That's the work that makes us happy ... becoming who we are.
